The low shoulder sign is a diamond and its colour is yellow. It is a warning sign: something ahead — a curve, a crossing, a change in the road — needs you to slow down and adjust what you are doing.

There is a vertical drop between the lane and the shoulder. Catching that edge can jerk the steering; the recovery is to slow first and ease back on, not to yank the wheel.
The instinctive correction — steering hard back onto the pavement — is what turns a dropped wheel into a rollover or a head-on.

A drop-off at the pavement edge can grab a tire and drag the vehicle off the road, and yanking the wheel back can throw it across the centre line into oncoming traffic. If a wheel does drop, slow first and only then ease back up onto the pavement.
Treating the shoulder as spare road you can drift onto. Where the shoulder is low, the edge itself is the hazard, and the faster you are going the harder the recovery.
