Rear-ending the vehicle ahead is the most common commercial vehicle crash, and following too closely is the usual cause, which is why space ahead is treated as the most valuable space around the vehicle.
The belief that a heavy vehicle's main crash risk comes from cars behind it, which leads drivers to watch mirrors while neglecting the gap they control.

A coworker offers to guide you as you back into a dock. Where should the helper stand, and what has to be settled before you move?

A helper is only useful while you can see them, so their position has to stay inside your view, not inside your blind area directly behind the trailer. The one signal that must be unmistakable is the one that stops the vehicle, because that is the signal used when something has gone wrong and there is no time to negotiate its meaning.
Placing the spotter where they can best see the dock rather than where the driver can best see them. A helper standing behind the trailer is invisible to you and standing in the path of a vehicle that is about to move.

You are pulling a trailer that has ABS behind a tractor that does not. While braking hard you feel the tractor beginning to jackknife. What should you do?

Assuming ABS anywhere on the combination protects the whole combination, so the driver stays on the pedal while the unprotected axles are already sliding.

A retarder is tied to the accelerator, not the brake pedal: releasing the throttle all the way is the signal that you want the vehicle slowed. That is why simply lifting off in a vehicle with the retarder engaged produces noticeably more deceleration than the same lift with it switched off.
Expecting the retarder to work like an assist to the service brakes, activated by the pedal. Drivers who believe that are surprised by the deceleration that arrives the moment they lift off.

Filing springs and hangers under ride comfort, so a cracked hanger reads as a rough ride instead of an axle that is no longer located.

Confusing the load an axle carries with either the mass of the axle hardware or the load rating stamped on the tire sidewall.

The belief that brake-light flashing is a harmless warning gesture, when in a heavy vehicle it is an unpredictable signal delivered to a driver who already has no room to react.

Treating 26,001 pounds as the single gateway into the CDL system, so any lighter vehicle is assumed to need no CDL whatever it carries.

A steady pair of red lights looks the same whether the vehicle is doing sixty or standing still, and an approaching driver closes the gap on the assumption that it is moving. The four-way flashers are what breaks that assumption, which is why they go on as soon as you stop.
Treating visibility as the whole problem. The driver behind can see you perfectly well; what they have wrong is your speed, and only a signal that says "stopped" corrects it.

You are at the top of a long, steep grade in a loaded truck. Which gear should you be in as you start down?

Going down, gravity is adding energy instead of taking it away, so the gear that carried you up is not low enough to hold you back on the way down. Choosing the gear at the top matters because once speed builds, the transmission may not accept a lower gear at all, and you are left with brakes alone.
The old rule of thumb "same gear down as up." It underestimates the descent, and coasting in neutral is worse still: it removes engine braking entirely and can leave you unable to get any gear back.

An exit ramp posted at 35 mph curves and runs downhill at the same time. You are loaded near your gross weight. What is the correct approach?

Ramp speeds are set for passenger cars, and a loaded high-center-of-gravity vehicle has far less margin. A downgrade fights your braking while the curve is already using up your available traction, so the speed must come off before the geometry starts.
Reading a posted ramp speed as a guarantee for any vehicle. Ramp rollovers are a signature commercial-vehicle crash precisely because drivers treat the sign as validated for their load.

Which description fits bracing rather than blocking?

Blocking works at deck level, wedged tight against the cargo so it cannot slide. Bracing works from the top of the cargo down or outward to the floor and walls, resisting the load tipping or pushing over.
Using blocking and bracing as interchangeable words, so a driver installs only deck-level blocking and leaves a tall load free to topple forward.

Low beams light the road roughly 250 feet ahead and high beams roughly 350 to 500 feet. What does that mean for your speed at night?

Assuming that a speed within the posted limit is automatically a safe speed after dark. This is overdriving your headlights, and in a loaded vehicle with a long stopping distance it is the classic night crash.

The warning has to appear while you still have enough air to make a controlled stop. 55 psi is the threshold on a typical vehicle; the spring brakes will not grab until pressure falls much further, which is exactly the margin the warning is protecting.
Confusing the warning threshold with the pressure at which spring brakes apply on their own — those are two different numbers, and the gap between them is your time to pull over.

Missing leaves in a leaf spring is a suspension defect. At what point does it put the vehicle out of service?

One-fourth is the line at which an inspector will stop the vehicle. It is not the line at which the spring became dangerous, and a lower count is no licence to keep driving.
Reading the out-of-service threshold as the point where the defect becomes dangerous. It is only the point where someone else will stop you; a single broken leaf can still shift and strike a tire.

Losing track of the miles behind you is a recognized warning sign of fatigue, and the only thing that reverses sleep debt is sleep. Trying to push on when you are tired is far more dangerous than most drivers believe and is a major cause of fatal crashes.
The belief that cold air, loud music, or caffeine can substitute for rest. They mask the symptom for a short while and then wear off, often leaving the driver more impaired and now further from a safe place to stop.

Trusting the label: "slippery" sounds like the setting for a slippery road, but using it there costs braking without buying safety.

- Pass the written knowledge tests for the class and endorsements you want, hold a commercial learner's permit for at least 14 days, complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training, then pass the skills test. Connecticut's licensing agency publishes the current fees and appointment rules.
- How many questions are on the Connecticut CDL General Knowledge test?
- 50, with 80% correct to pass. Air Brakes adds 25 questions and Combination Vehicles 20.
- Are CDL rules the same in every state?
- The core knowledge is federal — 49 CFR and the AAMVA model manual — so the questions barely change across state lines. Fees, waiting periods and endorsement details are set by the state.
