Below the warning threshold you are running out of the air the service brakes need. Stopping while you can still modulate them is the whole point of the warning; waiting for the spring brakes means an uncontrolled stop wherever you happen to be.
Treating the spring brakes as a backup you can drive on. They are an emergency device that stops the vehicle where it stands, not a way to finish the trip.

In a double-clutch downshift, after you go to neutral and let the clutch out, what do you do with the accelerator?
Not quiteCorrect answer: C — Press it, so the revs come up to where the lower gear will engage at your current road speed
A lower gear spins the engine faster at the same road speed. Raising the rpm while the transmission is in neutral is what brings the two sides of the clutch to the same speed, so the gear engages instead of grinding or refusing. Waiting for rpm to fall widens the mismatch you are trying to close.
Assuming downshifting is upshifting in reverse order with the same throttle behaviour. The pedal work is what actually differs between the two, and getting it wrong on a downgrade can leave you with no gear at all.

Riding the service brakes instead of letting the engine hold the vehicle back dumps enormous heat into the foundation brakes. That heat chemically alters the friction material so it grips less, and it swells the drums outward at the same time, so both halves of the friction pair work against you.
Blaming fade on an air supply problem, which sends drivers looking at the gauge instead of changing the technique that is cooking the brakes.

Backing a trailer works through a hinge: pushing the tractor's rear to one side swings the trailer's rear to the other. Once the trailer is turning, you have to steer back the other way to follow it, or the bend keeps closing into a jackknife.
Carrying straight-truck backing habits into a combination. The single most common error is steering the way you want the trailer to go and then chasing the result.

The belief that reading is passive enough to be safe, or that the rule only reaches SMS. Both readings let a driver rationalize eyes-down time on e-mail, instant messages, or pulling up a web page while rolling.

The stop-along-the-way check targets what changes while the vehicle is working: components loaded by heat, weight and vibration. Those are the parts that were sound this morning and may not be sound now.
Repeating the engine-compartment inspection at every stop, when the fluids checked cold in the yard are not what fails between here and the next town.

You are stopped on the shoulder of a divided highway. How soon must the warning devices be out, and where do they go?

On a divided road every vehicle that matters is coming from one direction, so all three devices are spaced out on that side: one close in to mark the vehicle, and two progressively farther back to give approaching drivers warning at highway closing speeds. The ten-minute limit exists because the most dangerous period is the one right after you stop.
Thinking of the devices as decoration for the vehicle rather than a graduated warning laid out along the approach. Bunching them near the truck warns only the driver who has already arrived.

Two loaded trucks weigh the same overall, but one has its axles spaced much closer together. Why might only the close-coupled truck be over the axle weight limits?

The concern is how much weight lands on a short stretch of structure at once. Bunching the axles concentrates the same tonnage over a smaller span, so the formula responds by lowering what each axle may legally carry.
The belief that being under the legal gross weight automatically means the axle weights are legal too, no matter how the axles are arranged.

An oncoming driver leaves their high beams on and the glare is hurting your vision. What should you do?

Looking away from the light source and steering by the right edge keeps you tracking your lane while the glare passes. Glare blindness lasts several seconds, and even two seconds at highway speed covers more than half a football field, so the fix has to be something you do before you are blinded.
The idea that returning high beams teaches the other driver a lesson. It doubles the glare on a closing head-on path and blinds both drivers at once, at the worst possible moment.

Treating gear selection as optional and the brakes as the real tool for descending, which is the exact usage pattern that produces fade.

- Pass the written knowledge tests for the class and endorsements you want, hold a commercial learner's permit for at least 14 days, complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training, then pass the skills test. Maine's licensing agency publishes the current fees and appointment rules.
- How many questions are on the Maine CDL General Knowledge test?
- 50, with 80% correct to pass. Air Brakes adds 25 questions and Combination Vehicles 20.
- Are CDL rules the same in every state?
- The core knowledge is federal — 49 CFR and the AAMVA model manual — so the questions barely change across state lines. Fees, waiting periods and endorsement details are set by the state.
