The running gear and suspension of a heavy vehicle are built around the weight it is meant to carry, and they behave best when that weight is actually on board. Take the load away and the tires press into the surface far less firmly, grip falls off, wheels lock more readily, and the empty unit ends up needing more road than the loaded one did.
The intuition that lighter always means shorter stops. It is true that a heavier vehicle asks more work of the brakes, but a driver who reasons from weight alone will run an empty rig at loaded-vehicle following distances and be caught short.

You are hauling a tarped load down the highway. Why should you keep glancing at the cover in your mirrors?
Not quiteCorrect answer: A — A cover working loose in the wind can be torn away, leaving the freight exposed and possibly blinding you or the driver behind you
A cover only does its job while it is still attached. Once it begins working loose, wind can rip it free, which both exposes the load to spill and can put fabric across your windshield or the vehicle behind you.
Treating tarping as a task finished at the loading dock, so nobody looks at the cover again until the delivery.

A tractor's FMVSS certification label shows no gross combination weight rating. How is the GCWR of the tractor-trailer then established?

The rating is meant to describe what the whole combination is built to handle, so when the manufacturer prints no single number the fallback is arithmetic: total the tractor and trailer figures, and the largest total you can form is the one that counts.
Assuming that a combination with no printed GCWR simply has no combination rating, so only the tractor's GVWR matters.

In defensive driving, what does the word hazard refer to?

The label attaches to potential danger, not to danger that has already arrived. Calling a slow-moving pickup or a driver reading a map a hazard is exactly the point: naming it while it is still only a possibility is what buys you the seconds to act gently instead of violently.
The belief that something only counts as a hazard once it is actively threatening you. Drivers who wait for that threshold have already spent the time the label was supposed to create, and they meet the situation as an emergency instead.

An oncoming driver leaves their high beams on and the glare is hurting your vision. What should you do?

Looking away from the light source and steering by the right edge keeps you tracking your lane while the glare passes. Glare blindness lasts several seconds, and even two seconds at highway speed covers more than half a football field, so the fix has to be something you do before you are blinded.
The idea that returning high beams teaches the other driver a lesson. It doubles the glare on a closing head-on path and blinds both drivers at once, at the worst possible moment.

After signalling, why should a lane change be made slowly and smoothly?

You cannot guarantee that a blind spot is empty, so the lane change itself should contain a margin for being wrong. Moving over gradually turns the maneuver into a warning that someone else can still react to, rather than a movement that arrives faster than they can respond.
Treating the mirror check as proof the lane is clear and the lane change as merely the execution of that decision. A slow change is the second line of defence for the vehicle the check missed.

Your trailer sits visibly lower on the right side because the freight has settled against that wall. Gross and axle weights are all legal. What is the safety problem?

A trailer that already leans has spent part of the lean it can survive before the inside wheels lift. Add a corner or a ramp and the remaining margin disappears, so the fix is to center the load and spread it out, not to drive it as it sits.
Treating legal weight as proof the load is safe. Scale tickets say nothing about where the weight sits inside the box, and side-to-side placement is what decides how much lean a turn can add.

The schedule has two triggers running side by side, one based on driving time or distance and one based on stopping. A break brings the vehicle to a standstill anyway, which makes it the natural moment to walk the load.
Treating the three-hour or 150-mile interval as the only trigger, so breaks taken before that interval expires are skipped.

Trailers carry a yellow malfunction lamp on the left side so the driver can see it from the mirror or while walking around. Tractors, trucks and buses show theirs on the instrument panel instead.

Which gear and what speed should you use when backing a heavy vehicle?

At crawling speed a steering error moves the rear of the vehicle only a few inches before you notice it, and you can stop within that distance. Speed multiplies both the size of the error and the distance needed to stop, and behind you is exactly where you cannot see what you are about to hit.
Judging a backing maneuver by how quickly it is completed. Time spent backing is not the hazard; distance travelled blind before an error is caught is the hazard.

How should your hands be placed on the steering wheel of a commercial vehicle?

Hitting a curb or a deep pothole sends a violent kick back through the steering. Two firm hands placed opposite each other give you leverage on both sides of that kick, so the wheel cannot be torn out of your grip and the vehicle cannot be steered for you.
Carrying over relaxed car habits, where a light one-handed grip is survivable. Heavy steer axles transmit far more force to the wheel, and a hand that is not there when the kick comes cannot catch it.

You wear prescription lenses and own a tinted pair that helps with daytime glare. Should you wear them for night driving?

At night there is very little light to begin with, and anything that darkens the view takes away detail you need to identify hazards. Trading a little less glare for a lot less light is a losing bargain after dark, which is also why sunglasses have no place in the cab at night.
Equating glare reduction with better night vision. The comfort of a dimmer scene is mistaken for improved seeing, while pedestrians, animals, and unlit road users disappear into the dark sooner.

Dropping the perception segment and totalling only reaction plus braking, which lands near 277 feet. That omission hides about 140 feet of road, the length that decides whether a rear-end collision happens at all.

Metal expands when hot, so the friction surface moves away from the shoes. The chamber pushrod has a fixed amount of travel, and spending more of it just reaching the drum leaves less to squeeze with, so the same pedal effort produces a weaker application.
Picturing fade as purely a slippery-lining problem, which hides the geometric half of the failure and why fade gets worse the longer the grade runs.

The rearward tilt lets the trailer's plate ride up onto the wheel instead of catching its edge, and open jaws are what the kingpin drives into. If the jaws are already closed, the kingpin cannot enter and can end up sitting on top of them.
Believing closed jaws mean the coupling is ready and secure. Closed jaws before coupling are the setup for the most dangerous failure there is, a trailer resting on top of the fifth wheel.

Missing leaves in a leaf spring is a suspension defect. At what point does it put the vehicle out of service?

One-fourth is the line at which an inspector will stop the vehicle. It is not the line at which the spring became dangerous, and a lower count is no licence to keep driving.
Reading the out-of-service threshold as the point where the defect becomes dangerous. It is only the point where someone else will stop you; a single broken leaf can still shift and strike a tire.

What is a simple way to check whether the road surface is beginning to ice up?

Exposed metal on the outside of the cab collects ice at about the same time the road does, so it acts as a free thermometer you can reach without stopping. Spray, by contrast, tells you the surface is wet, and wet is the one thing black ice successfully imitates.
Thinking you have to test the surface with the brakes to find out whether it is slick. Deliberately breaking traction at speed in a heavy vehicle is how a driver turns a suspicion into a jackknife, and there is a harmless check available instead.

Tunnel walls shield the vehicle from crosswind, so the full force arrives all at once at the exit, and an empty trailer has the least weight resisting it.
The belief that a heavier load makes a vehicle more vulnerable to wind, when in fact the lighter the vehicle the more easily wind pushes it out of its lane.

- How do I get a CDL in Minnesota?
- Pass the written knowledge tests for the class and endorsements you want, hold a commercial learner's permit for at least 14 days, complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training, then pass the skills test. Minnesota's licensing agency publishes the current fees and appointment rules.
- How many questions are on the Minnesota CDL General Knowledge test?
- 50, with 80% correct to pass. Air Brakes adds 25 questions and Combination Vehicles 20.
- Are CDL rules the same in every state?
- The core knowledge is federal — 49 CFR and the AAMVA model manual — so the questions barely change across state lines. Fees, waiting periods and endorsement details are set by the state.
