- 1.
Green highway signs are used to show:
Not quiteCorrect answer: A — Directions, distances and destinations
Green is the guidance colour: exits, distances and destinations. Blue marks motorist services (fuel, food, lodging, hospitals) and brown marks recreational or cultural sites.
Green signs give information, not orders — the rules you must obey are on white regulatory signs.
- 2.
A lane in the centre of the road is bounded by a solid yellow line with a broken yellow line inside it, on both sides. That lane is:
Not quiteCorrect answer: A — A two-way left turn lane, shared by both directions for turning only
The shared centre turn lane may be entered from either direction to make a left turn, or to wait for a gap. It is not a travel lane and not a merging lane.
Using it to accelerate up to traffic speed before merging, or to travel any distance, is both illegal and a head-on risk — someone is turning into it from the other direction.
- 3.
You are parked at an Illinois kerb and about to open your door into moving traffic. The handbook says you may do so:
Not quiteCorrect answer: B — Only when it can be done safely and without interfering with traffic
Opening a door on the traffic side is permitted only when it is safe and does not interfere with traffic. The Dutch Reach — opening with the far hand so your body turns toward the road — is how you make that check.
A mirror is set for traffic lanes, not for the strip a cyclist occupies right beside your door.
- 4.
If you are arrested in Illinois with a blood-alcohol concentration of .08% or more, your driving privileges will be suspended for at least:
Not quiteCorrect answer: B — Six months
The handbook gives a minimum of six months for a .08% or higher result.
The suspension is administrative and begins independently of the criminal case.
- 5.
You should signal a turn or lane change:
Not quiteCorrect answer: C — Well before the manoeuvre, so others can react
A signal is a prediction, not a commentary. Most states specify a minimum distance; the underlying point is that it must arrive before you act.
Signalling and turning in the same motion gives following drivers no information they can use.
- 6.
What does this symbol sign tell you?
Not quiteCorrect answer: B — You may not park here
The letter P inside a red circle with a diagonal slash is the symbol form of NO PARKING. The P on its own would point you towards parking; the red circle and slash reverse it into a prohibition.
Seeing the P and reading the sign as permission. On a regulatory sign the red slash always cancels the symbol underneath it.
- 7.
A pedestrian is crossing against the signal, clearly in the wrong. What should you do?
Not quiteCorrect answer: B — Yield anyway and avoid the collision
Right-of-way is something you give, not something you take. Every handbook states that a driver must take reasonable care to avoid a pedestrian regardless of fault.
"I had right-of-way" is a legal argument, not a defence against hitting someone.
- 8.
What should you do when you see this round yellow sign?
Not quiteCorrect answer: B — Slow, look and listen for a train, and be ready to stop before the tracks ahead
The circle is reserved for advance warning of a railroad crossing. It is placed far enough back that you can start looking and listening while you still have the distance to stop short of the rails.
Expecting every crossing to announce a train with gates and lights. Many crossings carry only a crossbuck, so your own look down the track is the check that always works.
- 9.
Illinois law requires a turn signal in all of these situations except one. Which is NOT on the list?
Not quiteCorrect answer: A — When reversing out of a parking space
The handbook lists signals before turning any corner, turning into any driveway, parking lot or parking space, changing lanes, after passing another vehicle, and pulling to or away from any curb. Reversing is governed by other rules.
The "after passing" and "into a parking space" cases are the ones drivers omit, because both feel too minor to announce.
- 10.
The beacons on this sign are not flashing and no children are visible. What speed applies?
Not quiteCorrect answer: D — The normal posted limit for that road
A WHEN FLASHING plaque makes the reduced limit conditional. With the beacons dark, the ordinary limit for the road applies.
The reverse mistake is more dangerous: assuming the reduced limit is only advisory when the beacons ARE flashing. When they flash, it is an enforceable limit.
- 11.
A pedestrian is crossing at an intersection with no painted crosswalk lines. What is your obligation?
Not quiteCorrect answer: D — Yield — an unmarked crosswalk exists at most intersections
A crosswalk exists at an intersection whether or not it is painted. The paint makes it more visible; it does not create the right to cross.
"No lines, no crosswalk" is one of the most consequential misconceptions on the test and on the road.
- 12.
An orange sign at the roadside means:
Not quiteCorrect answer: B — You are approaching a work zone, where fines are often doubled
Orange is reserved for temporary traffic control in construction and maintenance zones. Expect workers, lane shifts and reduced speed limits; many states double the fines for violations inside a work zone.
Orange does not mean the road is closed — it means conditions have temporarily changed.
- 13.
This pennant-shaped sign appears on the LEFT side of the road. Why is it placed there rather than on the right?
Not quiteCorrect answer: B — It marks the start of a no-passing zone, and the left side is where a passing driver would be looking
The pennant is the only warning sign mounted on the left. It marks the beginning of a no-passing zone and is placed where a driver who is about to pull out to pass will actually be looking.
Its position does not mean it applies to someone else — it applies to you, and it is a legal restriction, not just advice.
- 14.
You are leaving a private driveway and entering a public road. Your obligation is to:
Not quiteCorrect answer: D — Yield to all traffic and pedestrians on the road and sidewalk
A vehicle entering a roadway from a driveway, alley or parking lot yields to everything already there, including people on the footpath you cross.
The sidewalk is the part people forget. You cross it before you reach the road, and pedestrians on it have priority.
- 15.
This sign is posted at an intersection. What does it prohibit, and for whom?
Not quiteCorrect answer: A — Pedestrians may not cross here; drivers should expect them to cross elsewhere
The prohibition is on the pedestrian, not the driver. It is posted where crossing is unsafe, which tells a driver where people will cross instead.
Regulatory signs are assumed to always address drivers. Some address pedestrians and cyclists, and reading them tells you where people will be.
- 16.
You are parking facing UPHILL at a kerb. Your front wheels should be turned:
Not quiteCorrect answer: A — Away from the kerb, so the car rolls back into it
Facing uphill the car rolls backwards, so the wheels are turned out and the rear of the tyre catches the kerb.
With no kerb at all, the wheels are turned toward the edge of the road in both cases — the kerb is what changes the answer.
- 17.
A NO RIGHT TURN sign faces you as you wait at an intersection. Where does that prohibition apply?
Not quiteCorrect answer: D — To the right turn at that intersection, from the approach where the sign is posted
A regulatory sign controls the place it is posted. It restricts the movement from that approach at that intersection; the next intersection is governed by its own signs, or by none at all.
Assuming a turn restriction carries on down the street. Each intersection is signed separately, so a restriction at one says nothing about the next.
- 18.
May you pass another vehicle by driving on the shoulder of the road in Illinois?
Not quiteCorrect answer: C — No
The shoulder is not a travel lane. It is the escape space for a breakdown and the route an emergency vehicle uses.
A paved shoulder looks like an available lane during congestion, which is exactly when someone is most likely to pull onto it.
- 19.
A NO PARKING ANY TIME sign allows you to:
Not quiteCorrect answer: D — Stop briefly to load or unload passengers, but not to park
No parking prohibits leaving the vehicle standing. Momentarily stopping to let a passenger in or out is generally still permitted, unless a stronger NO STOPPING sign is posted.
Staying in the driver seat does not make it legal parking. The distinction the signs draw is between parking, standing and stopping — not between occupied and empty.
- 20.
In dense fog, the correct headlight setting is:
Not quiteCorrect answer: B — Low beams
High beams reflect off the water droplets and throw the light back at you, reducing what you can see. Low beams throw light under the fog.
More light feels like better visibility. In fog, snow and heavy rain, more light means more glare.
